Josephine Backshall 39, married with 3 young children placed an advert in the Maldon and Burnham Standard saying she was looking for work in early 1974. Josephine was expecting baby sitting or typing but a caller named Peter suggested the possibility of modelling clothes or cosmetics He failed to keep 2 appointments which he apologised for. After this she met him on many occasions, he even photographed her in her own garden in Maldon. On the 29th of October he rang Josephine to say he had been let down could she fill in? At 6pm Josephine drove off in her red Ford Cortina and would be found 3 days later.
She was found face down in a pond at Little Hadham near Bishop's Stortford, hands tied in front of her, fully clothed with no signs of sexual assault. Cause of death was strangulation.
Peter was described as in his early 30s, tall, heavily built with a knowledge of womens perfumes and toiletries and a good photographer Police enquiries revealed 3 other women in the area had rejected Peter's modelling jobs when he'd replied to their adverts.
Josephine's car was seen in Collingwood Road Witham with the bonnet up at around 715pm. It was later found broken into. She was believed to have been with Peter in the Fountain pub in Good Easter. A post mortem revealed she had eaten a Chinese meal.
In 2010 a 68 year old Esex man was arrested and questioned then released on bail. Since then no further developments
Who was the mysterious Peter? Were there any similar crimes comitted in the area and around the same time? Why was Josephine killed? No signs of sexual assault or robbery. Did Peter kill again? Perhaps he was so horrified at his crime he either took his own life or lived a law abiding life since.
