. yes the books give a complete picture of that period [England & Wales] - v. interesting .... m:) Yes, these are the books I was never aware of whilst I going there regularly...... Its pretty difficult to get to the National Archives now, either locked down or conditional on some weird pre-advance booking system that I cant quite figure out. I might never see them. (I think I have some spead sheet from them those that I was sent)

Yes, but the National Archives might never open up again due to Health and Safety reaons. It was already frought enough being able to touch the pages. I would not be surprised if they documents could only be viewed in their boxes/folders etc and not allowed to be opened for health and safety reasons. I tried to book a slot about a week ago, I don't know why, and it seemed all booked out using some ticket ordering thing managed by a third party that looked like it was designed for events that you had to pay for. The National Archive event was 'free'. But it was all booked out, the ones that were open, in two weeks time could not be booked until some days later. If they wanted to make it difficult they could not have tried harder. Its strange really as I have a huge amount of the relevent cases in my possession. I was like the Cookie Monster in a biscuit barrel, I would wander arround shouting 'DOCUMENTS'. If the staff there had a sense of humour I would have called myself the Document Monster and shouted DOCUMENTS everytime I spoke to them. Just another wafer thin documet, go on then. I imagine the archives will open again sooner or later, but its food for thought. There will probably be restrictions of some sort. I was once there and someone was doing something, I cant remember what, personal research I think, he was 'young; but had grey hair, still able bodied by any account, but he said 'I wish I had started earlier'. It always struck me as poignent. I don't know why, but I was already years into my efforts to get the DOCUMENTS!!! (hoot hoot) and I sort of read that as a time warp sort of reflective perspective on how difficult it would be later in life. I think a lot of people 'retire' and write a book, but those doing so in their 'living years' are fewer and some things are les possible in later years. Some days I would get there and do a full days work photographing stuff. It was hard work. Back breaking. If someone asked if I wanted to start again I would say no. It was only supposed to be a weekend project, the Execution site. Knock it out in a weekend. Nearly ten years later and I have still not finished. And yet, I never saw thoses huge chocolate cakes you pointed out, HO 384/160, like no one told me about them, like they were not the first thing I would have jumped on if I had known about it.

.... yes I went between 1996 and 2014 .... not as many times as u did - and used a digital camera after 2004 .... I enjoyed it immensely; but I don't think I'd go back - after 2004 most of it was for the true crime mag - the police photos to go with the stories .... my main interest in the subject is really lists, tables etc and executions abroad (lists) so spend a lot of time on BNA .... I did order a few on-line but they are basically a pound a photo and u don't know the how many bits are in a file before u start ....
I used/use the TNA search engine a lot - that is how I found HO 380 etc I think I just typed the words 'life imprisonment' - there's prob. other stuff .... I mean the stuff of the rest of the 1980's must be somewhere in the Home Office - maybe a computer file ....
One day it will all be digitalised in 2065 when I am a hundred ....

Like all my effot will be thwarted into redundency as they develop a nanobot that can crawl the unopen documents and essentially digitally map the whole thing with photographic presision. Every document will be perfectly copied. Either that or differential scanning like they do with mummies. Alternativly they will invesnt a camaera that can look through time and you'll be able to see all the court cases replayed. They wont allow the plebs access to the 'crime' loops, but the police will be able to go back and watch any even in time, including the Kennedy assassination. Or at least its a possibility. Jack the Ripper wont be laughing so loudly then as he is revealed to be....
