I recently watched the short film 'Detainment' which was made a couple of years back. It is the dramatised account of the Thompson and Venables
police interviews, taken from the actual transcripts.
I remember it created controversy when it first came out. Jamie Bulger's mother hadn't been consulted and wasn't happy that it had been made.
I agreed with her. There had been tv programmes, documentaries made and books written about the case. I wasn't sure what the point of
the short film was.
Anyhow, curiosity did get the better of me and I watched it on youtube. Now I know, like most people, quite a lot about the case. My opinion was
always that they shouldn't have been released (or at least they should've served very, very long sentences) Though I must admit, there was always
that voice in my head arguing that children shouldn't be tried like adults.
Having watched the film, it made me realise just how completely psychopathic T&V really were/are. They were emotionless (only upset and crying for themselves)
manipulative - trying to blame each other -and in a way mentally older than their years.I never saw or heard any real guilt, remorse or empathy for James.
It got me thinking about other crime documentaries, for example Duffy and Mulcahy, the Railway Killers. In that doc, they spoke about how when D&M
were at school, they tortured animals. Then as they grew older their level of violence and offending escalated. We discover this retrospectively, like in most criminal
cases. T&V's level of offending, for such a young age, was probably worse than anyone I've ever read about, in these pages or elsewhere.
If they hadn't been caught, there is no doubt whatsoever, they'd have committed more heinous crimes, either together or individually.
I'm not sure what the Director's intention was for making the film. But the one thing I took from it, was that the little voice in my head has gone.
Normally we see psychopaths being interviewed in their 20s, 30s, 40s etc I think this was a rare occassion where we get to see psychopaths at
such a young age. In my opinion, those two are broken, can't be fixed and should never have been released.
Just to counter my own argument..ha...There is also a short video on youtube called 'child of rage' which is around 25+ years old now.
It is a young girl (a victim of sexual abuse) who is showing psychopathic tendencies and behaviour. The video is her being interviewed by
a child psychologist. I think it is almost certain that the girl would've grown up to be an offender. Thankfully there was intervention
and the story had a happy ending, as she grew up to be a normal, healthy-minded woman. So for me, I think psychopathy CAN be fixed
if it is treated, in the early stages. Though I would doubt this happens often. Maybe it is easier to treat in females than males? or maybe
her young age and the fact she hadn't done any real harm yet was a factor? I'm no psychologist, but find this stuff fascinating.
Anybody else have any thoughts on child psychopathy?

The above link is Detainment. Bit of a harrowing watch to be fair. (Has to be said though, I thought the young actors were amazing)

The above link is Child of Rage. Think of a female Damien Thorn from The Omen!
Heartwarming to know she grew up fine though!
