In February 1977 Adding Machine engineer David Walsh went into Williams & Glyns Bank in Prestbury, Cheshire as he did regularly to service the bank's machines. On this occasion he stabbed to death Ian Jebb 22 year old bank clerk. The other member of staff clerk Susan Hockenhull aged 19 yrs he took away in his car and left her on the moors tied and gagged where she froze to death overnight. The bank was closed for lunch and Ian and Susan were the only staff.
In October 1977 Walsh was sentenced to Life Imprisonment for the 2 murders and 15 years for robbery with a recommendation that he serve at least 25 years.
I've gone through the Deaths in Prison Custody list 1975 - 2014 and have not found David Walsh. I presume he was therefore released from prison in about 2002 ( which would be 25 years).
Haven't found anything by googling.
Is there any other way to find out if a prisoner has been released?

Hi:)
1) David Walsh is on there - 1-Apr-2003 - HMP Ashwell - Died of Natural causes ....
2) Also the minimum (or recommendations as they were called before 2003) do not mean a person is necessarily released - It can mean that, but there are cases of people serving 20 and soon to be 30 years more than the 'minimum' ....

The Prestbury bank killings are featured in a book I have: "Cause of Death" by Dr Geoffrey Garrett He was the coroner. Features a lot of cases from Manchester and surrounding areas. He worked on one of the Moors murders victims; the Trevor Hardy case among a lot of others. A very interesting read.

Matthew:) Thank you Matthew - I had looked at the list twice and missed it! the age at death of 56 years does tie in as the newspapers reported his age in 1977 as 30yrs ( altho I haven't been able to pin down his birth details. he lived in Macclesfield but doesn't seem to have been born there). Hi Nicola:)
I have Walsh's d-o-b as 18-Nov-1946
Years ago c.2000-2005 u could ring up the Lifer Unit and they would tell u if someone had died or how long they served; but it all ended up being stopped by the Freedom of Information Act (2000) ....
I remember asking about Walsh as the case had been in the True Crime mags I have sent cases to over the years and they wanted to know ....

Hi Nicola According to Dr Garrett's book, "Walsh was one of triplets, who within three months of their birth in 1946 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, were abandoned by their parents and sent to orphanages"
He was married, moved to Macclesfield and was heavily in debt.
