www.flickr.com/photos/brizzlebornandbred/8196523328"22-year-old psychopathic Dean Westwood had planned the murders of attractive, happy-go-lucky Weston-super-Mare girls, 19-year-old Karen Hastings and her 18-year-old friend Mandy Cotton, like a military operation, even boasting of his intentions" looks as if this sick guy, now 52, will soon be released. Sick to see how easy such pervs, sex offenders and murderers get treated at open prisons like Leyhill, I imagine this one will surely be major risk to women in society.

Dean Westwood was a gun freak who claimed that he thought the girls were laughing at him. I, like you am concerned with the decisions that are being made as to whether a prisoner is safe to release and does not pose a danger when released. Having served 29 years one could argue that he should be considered for parole but history is littered with prisoners that have fooled the authorities and have reoffended. In Westwood's case the crimes were such that his release would cause some concern.

Felt he could convince parole & probation he was a changed man. Although abusive and caused hassle to myself and others, prison could not send him back to closed conditions - due to his delicate condition [maybe put on a little for effect] still obsessed with military and women! clearly many mental health issues. Have written to parole board to ascertain situation - IMHO still a threat to women and anyone who may upset him.

I was also in with this guy (Winchester) and am convinced he won't get out / wouldn't cope out for more than a day and doesn't really want to be out. I can only base that on my own short experience but i am interested to hear what others experienced.

Sick to see how easy such pervs, sex offenders and murderers get treated at open prisons like Leyhill, I imagine this one will surely be major risk to women in society.First: Just because someone may be having a parole hearing does not mean that they will get parole and be released in some cases it can take 3 attempts before getting parole.
Second: Prisoners do not go straight to Leyhill or any other open prison (unless they are a politician) they start at Cat A and then move down to open via Cat B and Cat C. Their move will depend on their risk etc.
Third: If people want prisoners to spend more time in prison then the prison system needs more funding and of course more prisons, which means more tax payers money spent. The question is does the money come from a tax rise or does it come from cuts else where like Defence, Education, Social services or NHS spending?

What this story doesn't reveal is that Dean Westwood was responsible for 3 deaths - Karen's brother Andrew took an overdose two years afterwards because he was unable to live with what happened. Granted Westwood didn't feed him the tablets but for me he might as well have pulled the trigger on Andrew too. Those events are still raw to me but I can't begin to imagine how surviving family members must feel if he's being considered for release.
