www.blackkalendar.nl/content.php?key=6934&termRef=Thomas+Edward+ApplebyHello there! Thomas Appleby was a family member that we could find very little about, I had to submit many foi requests to get them to unlock his records but then quoted such a high price to get them I just couldn't afford it. We had never seen photographs of him until we saw this site, it is amazing and a little spooky! I see the source of information is National Archives at Kew, which is one of the places I had to do FOI requests. So would the photos be within those files? Did someone go to Kew to get these photos or are the now digital somewhere and I just can not find them? Really interested in learning more about him than just a couple of newspaper clippings. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have also found someone on here from the other side of my family tree but that is a whole other story! Thank you, Laura.

Yes, the photos are in the file PCOM 9/979 which is available at the National Archives.
THe other files would probably container a broader amount of information, MEPO 3/2207, ASSI 45/103/1.
THe MEPO file means Metropolitan Police, ie the London police. THe ASSI file relates to the files submitted for the Assizes court trial but are in most cases the same.
The PCOM is for the Prison Commission and will sometimes have the statements, appeals etc from the MEPO and ASSI files, but they generally have a bief overview. What they do have are the mugshots, as you can see. THey will also have the annual and periodic reports and release documents and occsionally details of any reofffences.
If you went to Kew you could see all of these files. I have looked and they are all open. However, the PCOM 9/979/1 has closed extracts. 9 pages. However, I would not have thought they were anything special. Could be files that have a relatives name or something.
