John Edwin Emsley (died February 1960) Couldn't see his record. Was thinking about 'The Fugitive' when reading this case!
John Edwin Emsley (39), a Sheffield grinder, was sentenced to death at Leeds Assizes yesterday for the murder of Robert Wilkinson at Sheffield. It was alleged the men had been at emnity for some years, and the day before Wilkinson - a one-armed man - was found lying dead in the road with his skull smashed, they had decided to make up their quarrel and went out together for a walk. The defence was that Wilkinson fell from a high wall after leaving Emsley. After being sentenced Emsley declared "I am innocent. You are hanging an innocent man" (Aberdeen press and journal 8th December 1920)
Murderer dies in Broadmoor John Edwin Emsley (78) was found guilty of wilful murder at West Riding Assizes in 1920, died this week in Broadmoor from cancer. At yesterday's inquest a verdict of death by natural causes was recorded. Dr John Maine, senior registrar at Broadmoor, said that Emsley was sentenced to death but later had his sentenced commuted to penal servitude for life. He was certified as insane in Parkhurst prison and was transferred to Broadmoor in 1942. (Birmingham Daily Post 24th February 1960)
