Police were called to Ritson Street, Toxteth on the above date after the body of a woman was reported. She was found to be 28 year old Margaret Armishaw, aka Peggy Stretch. Margaret had been strangled, her murderer was never caught.
At the time 46 year old John George Robinson was on parole & living in a Liverpool hostel after serving 14 years for the murder of 9 year old Clive Jones in Shipley.Robinson cut Clive's throat. Could Margaret Armishaw be a murder he commited?
Robinson found work in a Wakefield brick works & moved there. In October 1976 he strangled & mutilated his nephew's ex wife, 25 year old Mary Batty in front of her son.I've been looking into Robinsons murders & they are both very different victims & MO. I don't beleive Clive Jones was his first victim. Robinson was alorry driver from the mid 50s to 1962 & could have struck anywhere in the UK
Again another murder with few details so any further information on this murder or John Robinson much appreciated. many thanks

Hi Sportstergirl. There's an article in the Liverpool Echo (16th March 1977)
It reports on the inquest of Margaret Armitage. The quick details are: she was a prostitute and was found dead on the street she worked. The inquest said she had bruises to her neck but also, she had around 30 painkiller tablets in her system.
Pathologist Dr Charles St Hill found no evidence that she had been strangled. "There was no suggestion that she was forcibly attacked by anyone, the inquest heard" The jury returned a unanimous verdict of accidental death.
There is another article which says the pathologist at first thought she was murdered. Then having read an article in a British medical journal, he changed his mind. She had pills and a small amount of alcohol in her.
So it's recorded as accidental death, but maybe something more sinister happened? Possible. The police and courts, historically, didn't look too favorably on prostitutes. Sadly, they were not high priority cases.

Her inquest returned a verdict of accidental death. I have added it to see if there is a deeper 'mystery', but from the face of it she took 30 pills and a pint of beer and died from vagal inhibition.

haha!
It's interesting that at first it was being treated as a murder case. They initially arrested a suspect. Sadly, thirty painkillers and a pint, looks like a suicide cocktail to me.

Unless of course someone shoved them down her throat, washed them down with beer and then shook her about, in which case its a foul murder. If there is a shadow of doubt, let the reader decide, thats my moto. For example, 6-year-old David McLuckie who 'fell off a swing' in a 'park'. www.unsolved-murders.co.uk/murder-content.php?key=7156&termRef=David%20McLuckie

She was found around midnight. She was seen in a pub between 9pm-10pm. That would account for the alcohol maybe. I've only skimmed the surface with the articles on this case. MA's Grandmother was found dead in the River Mersey a couple of weeks after Margaret died. There seemed to be a doubt over what happened to her too. A bit of further reading for me tomorrow!

Re: David McLuckie, I thought 'fallen off a swing' sounded like a cover up. Though i did just find this article:
Girls injured in swing park Two young girls were injured in recreation grounds in the Bellshill district on Wednesday night and were taken to Law Hospital. Jean Rodger aged seven, of 32 Muirpark Rows, Bellshill sustained a fractured leg when she fell off a roundabout at a viewpark playground. Julia Coakley, also aged seven, of 20 Raith Drive, Bellshill, received head injuries when she was struck by a swing. Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser Saturday 14th August 1954
Their accidents happened eight days before David M was found dead. Not sure if it was the same park, but same district. I remember playing in an adventure playground when i was a youngster. Deathtraps.

Thanks all. Back to the drawing board! Never heard of the lady in the Mersey. More to look at for me too The accidents at the playground do sound suspicious as does "falling off a swing!"
