www.unsolved-murders.co.uk/murder-content.php?key=1329&termRef=Amala%20de%20Vere%20WhelanHer killer sprayed the word 'Ripper' in detergent on the wall of her flat. Never been solved. This took place in 1972 a few years before the name the Yorkshire Ripper was being used in the media. Sutcliffe had been linked to a few unsolved murders in and around London, as he traveled there to see his wife sometimes. I would imagine this was coincidental though and there was/is some undetected maniac, who was never brought to justice. Does anyone know any other details around this case? NB: Just to add, this case came to mind, due to the 'ripper' link and Sutclffe's death. I've read a little on the BN archives: Birmingham Daily Post 20th February 1973 Killer of 'friendly girl' a mystery, inquest jury finds
An Excerpt: "Prof Donald Teare, a pathologist said Amala, who was strangled, had probably been dead for three or four days. There was no signs of sexual interference" This differs from the BBC report stating that she had been raped. An interesting article: Daily Mirror 1st December 1972 Ripper warning to bed-sit girlsScotland yard murder squad detectives last night warned girls in London's bed-sit areas to be aware of a killer nicknamed "The Ripper." Police believe that the man who strangled 22yr old Amala de Vere Whelan in a Maida Vale flat, fifteen days ago may strike again. They want to interview a man in his twenties with semi-afro style hair who approached Amala in a pub before she died. The killer wrote word Ripper on the wall of her flat" Similar hairstyle to Sutcliffe? I suppose similar to quite a lot of men around that time period as well though.

A further addition: Marylebone Mercury 23rd February 1973 (excerpt) "Det.Con John Ross told of finding the word RIPPER written on the wall of the flat in lemon washing-up liquid. The body was lying face-downwards with a towel over the head. 'Her underwear was pulled down and skirt pulled up', he said. Pathologist Prof. Donald Teare said he took swabs of sperm from the body. Miss Whelan had been strangled with a nylon stocking and the cuts and bruises on her body had indicated there had been a struggle"
Seems there is a conflict in some of the facts that were reported.

Jan Bondesen's excellent book on London murders, states that a suspect within her inner circle, and who fit the profile, left the UK and went back to Nigeria right after the murder.

Had not come across author Jan Bondeson before but downloaded his book on South London murders last night and am enjoying it - he is the sort of author I like clear factual writing, interesting cases.
